Trade label.- Larcher Marchand Papetier…a la Teste Noire. Two variant designs for Larcher are found in the Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild trade card collection at Waddesdon Manor. French trade cards were often printed on laid paper as they doubled as high quality labels Trade label.- Larcher Marchand Papetier…a la Teste Noire, pasted into books or onto other objects sold. This would then remind a buyer of where they acquired a certain item or ‘attract new clientele on the basis of satisfied customer testimony exchanged in conversation.’ (Phillippa Plock ‘Advertising Books in 18th-Century Paris: Evidence from Waddesdon Manor’s Trade Card Collection’, in Books for Sale, BL, 2009). The stationer Larcher was active between c.1720 and c.1762 and was found at the sign of the black head. In the present card he offers fine papers, Dutch quills, Spanish wax, morocco leather locking wallets and boxes decorated with gold and silver. Rare.
