The inset shows a plan of the city, castle and harbour of Dunkirk/Duinkerken. Beautiful full colour title cartouche, compass rose and ships on the North Sea. At the time this region was part of the Low Countries.

Map by Nicolaas Visscher, published by Petrus Schenk in The Netherlands, c. 1700.

Made by Nicolaas Visscher after an anonymous artist. The Visscher family were art and map dealers in Amsterdam during the 17th century. Founded by C. J. Visscher (1587-1652), the business was continued by his son and grandson both named Nicolas. Nicolas Visscher I was born 1618 in Wenns, Austria. He died 1679 in Linz. After the death of Nicolas II, his widow passed the business to Pieter Schenk.

Condition: Very good, given age. Two sheets joined together as issued. Original folds as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
