J’oubliais la prime.’ (Counting money – Each purchaser of 2 liters is entitled to a bonus – F.! I forgot the bonus.) A drunk is interested in the bottles not the bonus. Age. c. 1912. This print originates from: ‘L’Assiette au beurre.’ (The plate with butter.) was an illustrated French magazine for anarchist designers which appeared 1901-1912 in 593 issues. It distinguished itself from other magazines through it’s unedited composition: each issue had 16 designs or charicatures on plain pages. It’s creator was Samuel Schwartz.Artists and Engravers: Artists: Caran d’Ache (Emmanuel Poirà  ). Caran d’Ache was the pseudonym of the 19th century French satirist and political cartoonist Emmanuel Poirà  . ‘Caran d’Ache’ comes from the Russian word karandash meaning pencil. While his first work glorified the Napoleonic era, he went on to create ‘stories without words’ and as a contributor to newspapers such as the Lundi du Figaro, he is sometimes hailed as one of the precursors of comic strips.
