Catalogue of military costumes of the Low Countries from: ‘Militaire Costumen van het Koninkryk der Nederlanden opgedragen aan Zyne Excellentie Willem Grave van Bylandt, Generaal Majoor, Provintiaal Commandant van Zuid Brabant, Ridder van de militaire Willems Order, Groot Kruis van de Order van Verdiensten van Beyeren, enz. enz. enz., published by Schouten Carpentier, Brussels c. 1824. This is the first ed. of this work. Most plates are identical to the second ed. except plates: 1-4, 6-9, 11-12, 17 and text differences only on plates: 10, 13 and 15.

Plates in this work were mostly drawn and lithographed by J.B. Madou, some by A. Courtois or Leopold Boens and printed by Schouten Carpentier and J. Delfosse.

This work is considered the apotheosis of Military Costumes for the Low Countries, including at the time The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Jean Baptiste Madou (1786-1877) was a Belgian painter, etcher and renowned pioneer lithographer.

Size: Overall size c. 24.5 x 33 cm.

Medium: Crayon style lithograph with original hand colouring on a wove (vellin) type paper.

Condition: mostly good; General age related toning; overall foxing as visible on the scans. Inquire about condition of specific prints in collection or study scans carefully.
