La Hollande a Vol d’Oiseau
Paris: G. Decaux & A. Quantin, 1881.
4to. [vi], ii, 400 pp. Original full cloth with gilt and black decoration and titling, all edges gilt, bevelled edges.
Illustrated with 24 heliogravure plates after etchings by Maxime Lalanne, an engraved map of the Netherlands, and numerous wood engraved illustrations in the text (ca. 145). The plates with tissue guards.
After the succes of La Hollande Pittoresque the published decided on producing a luxury edition, illustrated by Maxime Lalanne. To this end Havard revisited the Netherlands in 1880. The heliogravures and wood engravings in the text show most major Dutch cities, such as Amsterdam, Delft, Rotterdam, Groningen, Kampen, Hoorn, Haarlem and many others. The introduction states that the new text is nothing like La Hollande Pittoresque, the new work is less scientific and more picturesque.
A good copy, miminamal damage to the top of the spine, minimal shelfwear. Some foxing throughout.
