Critics had sometimes dismissed the exaggerated features of Hogarth’s characters as caricature and, by way of an answer, he produced this picture filled with characterisations accompanied by a simple illustration of the difference between characterisation and caricature.

From: “The Works of William Hogarth in a Series of Engravings: with descriptions and a Comment on Their Moral Tendencyby the Rev. John Trusler” (Jones and Co., Temple of the Muses, (Late Lackington’s), Finsbury Square, London, 1833).

Made by an anonymous engraver after William Hogarth. William Hogarth (1697-1764) began his career as an ornament engraver. He later turned to portrait painting an genre subjects. Hogarth became famous with his satirical prints.

Condition: Good, given age. Some small spots in the margins. A few minor crinkles General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
