Original antique print showing a portrait of William the Silent or William the Taciturn (1533 – 1584), more commonly known in the Netherlands as William of Orange (Dutch: Willem van Oranje), the main leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs that set off the Eighty Years’ War.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Published in France c. 1750.
Biography engraver: Jean Jacques Filipart (1719-1782) was a French engraver. His father was French engraver Jean Charles Flipart, under whom he received his initial training in the engraver’s art. Flipart later trained under French engraving master Laurent Cars (1699-1771). His brother Charles Joseph Flipart was noted both for his engraving and painting oeuvre.
