Description
This print shows the killing of a Walrus from a boat full of people, during the third voyage of Willem Barentsz, a Dutch captain,to the Arctic. They stayed at Nova Zembla in 1596 for the whole winterperiod.

Medium: Etching / engraving on handlaid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 40.5 x 32.5 cm (15.94 x 12.8 inch). Image size: 33.5 x 26.5 cm. (13.19 x 10.43 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Folds as published. Extra vertical fold, Creases in left corner. Remains of former tape on reverse in lower and upper margin. Brown spots in upper and lower margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

This attractive print was published in “Gescheidenissen der Vereenigde Nederlanden, by Le Clerc”, Amsterdam 1730.
Biography engraver: Johannes Luyken was a Dutch poet, illustrator, and engraver. Amsterdam born (1649-1712), Jan was a very important etcher in the period after Rembrandt. His artistry is distinguished by its clarity and detail.
