Medium: Engraving / Etching on hand laid (verge) paper.

Condition: good, given age. Trimmed and attached at top to a carrier sheet. Light foxing, soilng and creasing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. | PCO-E14-27

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: Samuel Ampzing’s “Beschryvinge ende Lof der Stad Haerlem in Holland.” published in 1628 in Haarlem.

Biography engraver: Jan van de Velde II (1593-1641) came from the southern Netherlands as a fugitive around 1600 to the northern Netherlands. His father was a writingmaster and Jan was trained as an etcher. He produced many highly important series of landscape prints.

Biography artist: Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam (1565-1607) was a Dutch Northern Mannerist painter, printmaker in engraving, and cartographer, and father of the painter of church interiors, Pieter Jansz Saenredam. He is noted for the many allegorical images he created from classical mythology and the Bible.
