– This print shows a view of Suratte. Various East Indiamen, dhows and other vessels are depicted lying at anchor or sailing in the harbour. Dutch Suratte, (India) was a directorate of the Dutch East India Company between 1616 and 1795, with its main factory in the city of Surat. Surat was an important trading city of the Mughal Empire on the river Tapti, and the Portuguese had been trading there since 1540. In the early 17th century, Portuguese traders were displaced by English and Dutch traders.

Condition: good, given age. Fold as published. Two upper corners missing, Creases in margin. Stains. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print was published by Jacob van Meurs, Amsterdam, 1671.

Biography engraver: Jacob van Meurs (1619/1620 – c. 1680) was a Dutch publisher and also an engraver. However it is uncertain whether he was also the engraver of these prints.
