BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published as part of Antoine Francois Prevost’s monumental 15-volume work, “Histoire Generale des Voyages”, written between 1746 and 1789. These works were produced in The Hague at Pierre de Hondt’s, ca 1740.
Biography engraver: Jacob van der Schley (26 July 1715 Amsterdam ? 7 February 1779 Amsterdam) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. He studied under Bernard Picart (1673-1733) whose style he subsequently copied. .
Biography artist: Johan Nieuhof, a 17th-century Dutch traveller whose reports on China captivated the European audience.
