‘”JEREMIAS”‘

– This print shows a view on two numbered copper engravings and accompanying poetic explanations of biblical scenes from the book of Jeremia. Above: the divine punishment and the destruction of Jerusalem. At the top, God (or an avenging angel) appears in the clouds as a rider on horseback, armed with lightning bolts and a flaming torch. This symbolizes the judgment of the city because of the idolatry of the people. In the foreground you see the desperate inhabitants of the city who succumb to the three severe plagues that Jeremiah prophesied: war (the sword), famine, and the plague. People lie powerless on the ground and the buildings collapse. Beneath: a complex composition in which the suffering of Jeremiah himself is central.
