Antique print, titled: ‘A chorographical map of the Province of New York in North America, …’ – Map of the state New York. An interesting map that shows the land patents with owners identified. Numerous details such as roads and trails, villages and towns, terrain, watershed, forts, lakes and more. Covers the region between the Delaware and Susquehanna Rivers, the St. Laurence River to Lake Francis and the 45th parallel and Connecticut River on the east. Reduced copy by David Vaughan in 1849 of the large map by Claude Joseph Sauthier of 1779 that was published by William Fadden in London, put on stone by Richard H. Pease. “Maps in the offices of Secr. Of State and Surveyor General”, Albany: Richard H. Pease, ca. 1850. Cartographers were David Vaughan, E.O. Olmsted and M.E. Seymour.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘David Vaughan and Richard H. Pease’ after ‘David Vaughan’. Printer / publisher: Richard H. Pease (1813-1869) was an engraver / lithographer and printer from Albany. Clausede Joseph Sauthier (1736-1802) was an engineer who accompanied Governor William Tryon to North Carolina in 1761. In 1771 he remained in his service when Tryon transferred to New York. In 1773 Sauthier was named surveyor of the Province of New York. He was commissioned to produce a survey from New York to Quebec and using the work of Bernard Ratzer along with his own surveys he produced ‘A Map of the Province of New York’ published by William Faden in 1776, on the day of the Declaration of Independence.
Condition: Good, given age. Original folds as issued. Some folds reinforced with acid free archival tape. Some faint soiling and some tiny stains. Crease in the left lower margin. Unlike most copies offered this map is not browned along fold lines and thus in above average condition. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
