De Spaansche oorlogsvloot van den Jaere MDLXXXVIII. – This print shows the demise of the Spanish Armada or Invincible Fleet, between 31 July and 12 August 1588. Naval battle between the Spanish and combined English and Dutch fleets in the Channel. In the foreground, a large Spanish frigate is fired upon by a small Dutch ship bearing the banner of the city of Leiden, on the left a galley.

Sheet size: 40,5 x 34 cm. (15,9 x 13,4 inch). Image size: 34,5 x 27 cm. (13,6 x 10,6 inch).

This attractive print originates from: P. Bor Christiaensz., Oorsprongk, begin, en vervolgh der Nederlandsche Oorlogen, Amsterdam 1679-1684, 4 volumes, dl. III (1681), p. 322. Ref: Hollstein Dutch 9.

Made by ‘Jan Luyken’ after own design. Jan Luiken / Luyken (1649-1712) belonged to the best engravers of the period. His son Casper (1672-1708) often assisted with the making of the prints.

Condition: Good, given age. Fold as published. Black spots from manganese fragments, from paper making process. Small brownish edges on rear. Small restored tear in right margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
