Description

Etching on hand laid (vergé) paper. Watermark: lettering.
Sheet size: 14 x 11,2 cm. (5,5 x 4,4 inch). Image size: 13,8 x 11 cm. (5,4 x 4,3 inch).

No. 12 of a series of 16 etchings of sheep. Probably from an ed. published by Nicolaes Visscher between 1660-1700. Of the first state only a handful were published. In 1726 Petrus Schenk acquired the plates. State: State 2,3 or 4 before numbering, c. 1660-1664 Ref: Hollstein Dutch 90 Provenance: Ex. Collection van der Grinten

Made by ‘Marcus de Bye’ after own design. Marcus de Bye (1639-1688) was a Dutch painter and engraver from The Hague. Pupil of the painter Jacob van der Does. He is more known for his etchings then for his paintings, among them fine work after Paulus Potter.

Condition: Very good, given age. Trimmed just outside image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
