Plate : ‘Les Parques.’ (The Fates). This plate shows an engraving after a painting by Rubens. The Destiny of Marie de’ Medici, is a twisting composition of the three Fates on clouds beneath the celestial figures of Juno and Jupiter. The Fates are depicted as beautiful, nude goddesses spinning the thread of Marie de’ Medici’s destiny. their presence at Marie’s birth assures her prosperity and success as a ruler. This original antique print originates from ‘Musee du Louvre. Galerie de Rubens dite du Luxembourg composee des vingt-quatre tableaux de la vie de Marie de Medicis graves sur acier par les premiers artistes …’, with text by S. de Saint-Planchez, published in Paris c. 1873 by Gustave Guerin (first published 1809). This work shows and describes paintings from the Rubens Luxembourg Gallery in the Louvre Museum, depicting the life of Maria de Medici, widow of King Henri IV, engraved by the foremost artists.Artists and Engravers: Gabriel, engraver.
