Plate : ‘Le Debarquement de Marie de Medicis au Port de Marseille.’ (The disembarkment of Marie de Medici at the Port of Marseille). This plate shows an engraving after a painting by Rubens. Allegorical scene with Marie de Medici getting on a ship in Marseille, France. Marie is flanked by her sister and aunt on board a sailing ship, with a central mast behind her right shoulder. Marie is welcomed to her new home by a personified France, wearing a helmet and a blue mantle decorated with golden fleur-de-lis. Fame blows two horns to announce her arrival to the people of France with her future husband. A knight of Malta, with the Cross of Saint John stands off to her left. A covered gangplank separates her from the land side. She is shown as having been accompanied by mythological characters in the foreground: the sea god Neptune, three water nymphs, a triton. with their presence ensuring a safe voyage. This original antique print originates from ‘Musee du Louvre. Galerie de Rubens dite du Luxembourg composee des vingt-quatre tableaux de la vie de Marie de Medicis graves sur acier par les premiers artistes …’, with text by S. de Saint-Planchez, published in Paris c. 1873 by Gustave Guerin (first published 1809). This work shows and describes paintings from the Rubens Luxembourg Gallery in the Louvre Museum, depicting the life of Maria de Medici, widow of King Henri IV, engraved by the foremost artists.Artists and Engravers: A.
