Biography engraver: Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was a Dutch engraver, son of Arnold Houbraken. He is best known for his refined portrait engravings executed for English publications, notably Thomas Birch’s The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain (1743-1752). His works are characterized by precise line work and elegant tonal modelling, and he became one of the most accomplished reproductive engravers of the 18th century.
Biography artist: Caspar Netscher (1639-1684) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, pupil of Gerard ter Borch. He specialized in elegant portraits and genre scenes, often depicting aristocratic sitters in refined interiors. His portrait of Queen Mary II served as the model for Houbraken’s engraving.
