Description
Portrait of Ward Bingley in the role of Avogaro. Ward Bingley (Rotterdam, baptized January 27, 1757 – The Hague, June 26, 1818) was a Dutch actor, playwright, translator and theater director, who was successively active in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague. With his colleagues Theo Majofski, Andries, Helena and Anna Maria Snoek, Geertruida Jacoba Hilverdink and Johanna Cornelia Wattier, he was one of the best-known actors of the classicist stage, which flourished in this period. Bingley was described as an educated man, with a tall figure, classic facial features, a piercing gaze, a lively facial expression and a deep, rough voice. The latter limited him somewhat in his roles.
