Description
Portrait of Pieter Johan van Berckel, a mayor of Rotterdam and the first Dutch envoy to the United States of America. Van Berckel remained formally part of the Rotterdam government. On January 30, 1788, he was dismissed as a member of the Rotterdam council by the States General of the Netherlands or Willem V. Van Berckel never returned to Rotterdam and can be considered a refugee.
