– A bird’s-eye view of the Dutch capture of the fort at Porto Calvo, Brazil, in February and March 1637, showing fortified structures, landscape features, troop movements, and encampments. The composition provides a topographical perspective of the region and its strategic importance. The region was a significant battleground between the Portuguese and the Dutch for control over the sugar industry. The print was created by Matthaus Merian and published in Theatrum Europaeum around 1640.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Theatrum Europaeum, Frankfurt, c. 1640.

Biography engraver: Matth?us Merian (1593-1650) was a Swiss engraver and publisher, best known for his detailed town views and historical battle illustrations. He took over the de Bry publishing house in Frankfurt and created important works documenting European and colonial conflicts.
