‘HORS PARIS. / COMMENT DONC QUI S?FAIT, PERE GUILLOT, QU?J?ENTENDIONS TOUJOURS PARLAI DU PLAN TROCHU ET QU?JE N?VOYONS RIEN SORTI? / DAM M?EST AVIS QU?UN PLAN EST COMME UN PLAN D?ASPERGES ET QUI L?Y FAUT TROIS ANS POUR MERI.’

– A satirical lithograph from 1871 depicting two French peasants conversing in a rural setting, discussing the inefficacy of General Trochu’s plan during the Siege of Paris. The text humorously compares Trochu’s “plan” to an asparagus plant, which takes three years to mature, mocking the slow and ineffective military strategy. One peasant, holding a spade, shakes hands with the other, who carries a walking stick. The rustic background suggests the rural displacement caused by the Franco-Prussian War.
