Plate: ‘Philippe Melancthon.’ Portrait of Philipp Melanchthon (1497 – 1560), born Philipp Schwartzerdt. He was a German reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation, intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation, and an influential designer of educational systems. This old antique master print originates from an unknown source published ca. 1735. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: This plate by Etienne-Johandier Desrochers (French 1693-1741).
