Plate g 31: This plate shows the Spanish conquistadors under Vasco Nunez de Balboa facing tree-dwelling indians in the lowlands of Panama. The Indians were called Cacique Abibeiba. Here, the natives lived in the trees, since the area was by a lagoon that was prone to frequent flooding. Some of the trees were so large, that it required up to 8 men, with outstretched arms, to go around the circumference of the trunk. High up in the trees, the constructed their homes of canes, woven to from stable platforms, with walls, and thatch roofs. Inside each house there were smaller compartments for the different families. Vasco Nunez de Balboa (c. 1475 � 1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. He is best known for having crossed the Isthmus of Panama to the Pacific Ocean in 1513, becoming the first European to lead an expedition to have seen or reached the Pacific from the New World. This attractive original old antique print originates from: ‘Naaukeurige Versameling der Gedenk-waardigste Zee en Land-reysen, na Oost en West-Indien, Mitsgaders andere Gewesten, ter eerster Ontdekking enn soo vervolgens van Verscheyde Volkeren, meerendels door Vorsten, of Maatschappyen Derwaarts gesonden, gedaan. Zedert het jaar 1526 tot 1529 …’, (transl.: Accurate accounts of memorable sea and land-voyages, to the East and West Indies and other regions, first discovering by different nations, mostly kings or companies send there. since 1525-1529.), published by Pieter Van Der Aa, Leiden 1706-1708. This section is part of this book and titled: ‘Seer aanmerkelijke scheepts-togten, gedaan door Franciscus Pizarrus, en Didacus Amagrus van Panama na Peru in den Jare 1526 …’ (Transl.: Very remarkable sea-voyages, by Franciscus Pizarro and Diego de Almagro to Panama and Peru in 1526 …) This part contains other accounts as well to Mexico, Costa Rica, Florida etc.Artists and Engravers: Publisher: Pieter van der Aa (Leiden 1659 – 1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases. Engraver: some plates or emblems in this work have the initials J.G. (Jan Goeree.) Jan Goeree (1670 � 1731) was a draughtsman, engraver, poet and author. mainly active in Amsterdam. The son of Willem Goeree and pupil of Gerard de Lairesse.
