Vue de la Porte de Muiden, a cote du Plantage. – This hand coloured optical print shows a view on the first Muiderpoort on Plantage Muidergracht and the future Sarphatistraat, in Amsterdam. We see boats with people in the canal, people walking, old houses and two mills in the backside.

Etching / engraving, hand coloured on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 42 x 30,5 cm. (16,5 x 12 inch). Image size: 40,5 x 30 cm. (15,9 x 11,8 inch).

This attractive print was published in Augsburg in1768. This is an optical print, also called ?vue optique? or ?vue d?optique?, which were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other devices of convex lens and mirrors, all of which produced an optical illusion of depth.

Made by ‘Frederic Leizelt’ after ‘Jan de Beijer ‘. Frederic Leizelt, active (1750?1800), was a German artist and copperplate engraver working from Augsburg. Jan de Beijer (1703 – 1780), also given as Jan de Beyer, was a Dutch draughtsman and painter known for this drawings of towns and buildings in the present-day countries of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. In total, he produced some 1500 drawings, over 600 of which were reproduced as engravings by other artists.

Condition: Good, given age. Light soiling. Trimmed. Attached to cardboard. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
