BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Naaukeurige Versameling der Gedenk-waardigste Zee en Land-reysen, na Oost en West-Indien’, (transl.: Accurate accounts of memorable sea and land-voyages, to the East and West Indies), published by Pieter Van Der Aa, Leiden 1706-1708. This section is part of this book and titled: ‘Seer aanmerkelijke scheepts-togten, gedaan door Franciscus Pizarrus, en Didacus Amagrus van Panama na Peru in den Jare 1526 …’ (Transl.: Very remarkable sea-voyages, by Franciscus Pizarro and Diego de Almagro to Panama and Peru in 1526 …). Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes. He also printed many maps that were often out of print, which he reissued.

Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670-1731) was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver and author in Amsterdam. Pupil of Gerard de Lairesse and son of Willem Goeree, he was active in illustrating historical and religious texts.

Biography artist: Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) was a Flemish-born engraver and publisher, known for his vivid illustrations of early voyages to the Americas, based on explorers’ accounts, often dramatized or idealized. .
