A historical engraving illustrating Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition searching for a passage through the Americas. The scene shows an armed confrontation between Spanish explorers and indigenous warriors, in Patagonia. A Castilian soldier is depicted falling, struck by an indigenous weapon, while other Spaniards fire their muskets. The engraving represents the violent encounters between Europeans and native populations during early explorations.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From: ‘Scheeps-Togt van Ferdinand Magellanes … In ‘t Jaar 1520’, after Anthony de Herrera. Published by Pieter van der Aa, in Leiden in 1706. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher, engraver, and cartographer known for producing travel books and historical illustrations. His works often contained elaborate engravings depicting key moments in exploration and conquest.

Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670-1731) was a Dutch engraver, draughtsman, and author, mainly active in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Gerard de Lairesse and created detailed historical engravings.
