BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From: ‘Scheeps-Togt van Ferdinand Magellanes … In ‘t Jaar 1520’, after Anthony de Herrera. Published by Pieter van der Aa, in Leiden in 1706. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher, engraver, and cartographer known for producing travel books and historical illustrations. His works often contained elaborate engravings depicting key moments in exploration and conquest.
Biography engraver: Jan Goeree (1670-1731) was a Dutch engraver, draughtsman, and author, mainly active in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Gerard de Lairesse and created detailed historical engravings.
