A historical engraving from Pieter van der Aa’s De-Roem-Waardige Zee-en-Land-Togten (1706) illustrating a Mesoamerican ball game (?llamaliztli) at the court of the Aztec Empire. The game was played with a rubber ball, and participants, wearing elaborate headdresses, used their bodies to strike the ball, aiming to pass it through stone rings. This sport had deep religious and political significance in Aztec society, often associated with the celestial movements and sometimes involving human sacrifice. The background shows an audience of nobles and warriors observing the match.
