Impressive woodblock triptych by Mizuno Toshikata, showing “Kusunoki Masakage escaping from his enemy with his wife”. The print shows a man standing next to a sedan chair in which a woman is seated. The carriers of the chair point towards some armed coming over a hill in the distance.

Medium: original coloured woodblock print, vertical oban triptych.

Sheet size: 71 x 35.5 cm (27.95 x 13.98 inch). Image size: 71 x 35.5 cm. (27.95 x 13.98 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Good, clear impression. Backed. A stain in the top left corner of the middle sheet. Of the three parts, the left is attached to the other two using acid-free archival tape. Due to the nature of these prints, the three parts of the image do not align perfectly. This is not a result of the scan, but an integral part of the print. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published by Akiyama Buemon. Artists and Engravers: Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908) was a student of Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), with whom he studied since the age of thirteen. Later Yoshitoshi would appoint Toshikata as his successor.
