‘HOMERO. / XXVII.’

– A finely engraved portrait medallion of Homer, the ancient Greek poet, depicted in profile facing left. The medallion is inscribed with Greek letters and the name “HOMERO” beneath the image. The engraving, executed by Etienne Picart in 1669, is part of a series of classical portrait medallions.

Description

Medium: Engraving on hand-laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 22.2 x 21 cm (8.74 x 8.27 inch). Image size: 13.2 x 10 cm. (5.2 x 3.94 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Minimal signs of aging, slight foxing at the margins. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Part of a series of classical medallion portraits, printed in Rome, 1669.

Reference: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Collection, Accession Number: 1985-52-5111.

Biography engraver: Etienne Picart (1632-1721) was a French engraver known for his fine and detailed prints of classical and religious subjects. He worked in Paris and later in Rome, where he produced numerous portraits, including this medallion of Homer. His works were widely admired for their precision and clarity.
