Plate, page 291: “Het Leven der Scythen” (The life of the Scythians). This quite gruesome print shows, among others, the King of the Scythians. Hyperboreans jumping off a cliff. Iphigeneia. etc. Many dismembered bodies, and bodies in the process of being torn apart or maimed, are featured in this image. This original engraving originates from: ‘Spiegel der Sibyllen, van Vierderley Vertooningen [etc.]’, by Johannes Aysma et al, published in 1685 in Amsterdam. (transl.: Mirror of sibyls / prophetess, of fourfold display.)Artists and Engravers: Artist and Engraver: Coenraet Decker (ca. 1650-1685) was a Dutch Golden Age engraver, and pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe.
Condition: Excellent given age. Original middle fold, paper loss repair to the bottom margin. General age related toning and light staining/thumbing. Please study scan carefully.
