Antique print, titled: ‘Ceres.’ – This print shows the harvesting and processing of grain with the goddess Ceres. In ancient Roman religion, Ceres was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. From: ‘The Gentleman’s Recreation.’, by Richard Blome, published by S. Roycroft in 1686. Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Francis Barlow’ after own design. Some of the plates in the originating work are by Francis Barlow. We do not know if this is one of them. Francis Barlow (1626-1704): Known as ‘the father of British sporting painting’, Francis Barlow was an English painter and etcher specializing in animal subjects. In 1666, Barlow’s etchings illustrated an edition of Aesop’s Fables. He also produced paintings for decoration.
Condition: Excellent, given age. Tiny tear in lower, reinforced using contemporary paper. A faint stain in the caption just below the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
