This prints shows a portrait of Gabriel de Beauveau (? – 1668). He was a French prelate. He studied at the University of Paris around 1623-1625 but he does not seem to have obtained a degree. His pre-episcopal career was entirely devoted to the service of Cardinal Richelieu mainly as ma?tre de chambre but also in the military, organizational and logistical fields. He was lieutenant general in April 1636 and then councillor of state but he lost the favor of Richelieu in 1638. At the time of his episcopal promotion, he was already a priest, dean of the chapter of N?mes and commendatory of the abbey of Turpenay in the diocese of Tours and of the abbey of Notre-Dame d’Ivry in the diocese of Evreux. Gabriel de Beauvau was made bishop of Nantes on 4 March 1635 after the transfer of Cospeau to Lisieux. He was appointed in February and consecrated in April 1636. He established a seminary in Nantes in 1641. The end of his career is not glorious because he is forced to resign under the pressure of his family members.
