‘CIRCULAR INSCRIPTION AROUND PORTRAIT; BELOW: LATIN TEXT BEGINNING “ERNEST CASIMIRO COMITI NASSOVIO?” WITH PRIVILEGES AND DATE “AO 1628”.’

– Striking oval portrait of Ernest Casimir, Count of Nassau-Dietz (1573-1632), depicted bust-length and turned slightly to the right. He wears an elaborate lace collar, richly embroidered sash, and armour, emphasizing both noble rank and military authority. The finely engraved oval is set within a rectangular field with dense cross-hatching, a hallmark of Dutch portrait engraving of the early 17th century. The engraving captures both the refined textures of lace and fabric and the dignified presence of the sitter, who was Stadholder of Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe.
