Description

Large (34.5×49 cm.) sheet made to be hand-filled with calligraphy and drawings related to a specific celebration / event. We found reference that this sheet is used to write up a Jewish marriage contract (ketubbah), given the couple at right top and a female caritas figure with children at top left. This design has been used since the late 17th.c. and is based on a long-used design by the Amsterdam based Italian engraver Salomon Italia. The Amsterdam City Archive has items dated as early as 1723. Further decorative motives including vases with multiple nature elements: birds, flowers, flanking the empty middle. Hebrew text.
