A historical engraving from Pieter van der Aa’s De-Roem-Waardige Zee-en-Land-Togten (1706) showing Hernan Cortes in negotiations with the Tlaxcalan people. The Spanish conquistadors, wearing 16th-century armor and carrying pikes and swords, stand on one side, while the Tlaxcalan leaders, depicted semi-nude with feathered headdresses, engage in discussion. The background features traditional Mesoamerican dwellings and a procession of indigenous people bringing offerings. This moment was crucial in the Spanish conquest of Mexico, as the Tlaxcalans allied with Cortes against the Aztecs.
