‘PAG. 1.’

– A dramatic engraving illustrating an episode from Jacob Jansz de Roy’s expedition, depicting an encounter between Dutch sailors and indigenous people along the shores of Melanesia or Papua. The scene shows an indigenous group, some nude, engaging in combat with armed Europeans who are attempting to board a ship. The background contains dense jungle and palm trees, while the ship, rigged with sails, awaits offshore. The accompanying text from Hachelijke reystogt van Jacob Jansz de Roy recounts a struggle for survival, including hunger, shipwrecks, and conflicts with native peoples. The passage visible in the second image mentions dangers faced by Europeans, the hostility of local inhabitants, and their precarious existence after being shipwrecked.
