Ref: IconClass 71R32.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Matthaus Merian’ after an anonymous artist. Matthaus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) learned the art of copper engraving in Zurich. He worked in various places throughout Europe, before returning to Basel in 1615. He moved to Frankfurt in Germany and worked for Johann Theodor de Bry, son of Theodor de Bry. Merian married de Bry’s daughter Maria Magdalena, and continued to work for De Bry for a period. From 1623 Merian ran the publishing house of De Bry, after his father-in-law’s death. He is mainly known for his Topographia Germaniae, a 21-volume town and country atlas which he produced with his son Matthaus the Younger.

Condition: Good, given age. Margins cropped close to the platemark. Left margin faintly stained. Letterpress on verso. Some staining from attachment on rear and paper a bit thin at left top corner. A faint pencil annotation in the lower margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
