This print represents the climactic Battle of Chupas between the forces of Diego de Almagro II and Vaca de Castro after the assassination of Francisco Pizarro. A chaotic, close-quarter battle scene between Spanish conquistadors in armor and native forces. Pikes, swords, and shields dominate the foreground, while cavalry engages in the mid-ground. Likely set outside Huamanga (Ayacucho), where the Battle of Chupas occurred in 1542, marking the fall of Almagro II.
