Description
Original etching/engraving on a verge type hand laid paper. Fragment of an unidentified watermark. On rear the collectors mark J.H.H in an oval (J.H. Halbertsma who was a Mennonite minister in Bolsward and Deventer; 1789-1869; ref: Lugt 1473).
Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 30.5 x 22 cm. The image size is ca. 28 x 20.5 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 12 x 8.7 inch. The image size is ca. 11 x 8.1 inch.
Original antique print. It appears to show: a cavalry battle scene between Arabs and Alexander the Great’s army, on the coast. Some ships in the background, while in the foreground two cavalry detachments clash. Several casualties litter the ground. Very nice dark impression.. Master print, source unknown, to be determined.
It was published in c. 1670. Artists and Engravers: Artist: Bourg. Engraver: Gerard Audran. Published by: unknown, to be determined, in c. 1670. Gerard Audran (or Girard, 1640-1703) was an engraver from the French Audran family, the third son of Claude Audran. He was born in Lyon and was taught the basics of design and engraving by his father. He perfected himself in the art in Paris, where worked for Le Brun, among others. We have been unable to trace Bourg.
Condition: Very good, given age. Margins cropped close to the platemark. Slight discolouration from framing. Collection mark (ink stamp) to the rear. General age-related light toning and/or staining from handling. Please study scan carefully
