Antique Print-ANATOMY LESSON BY DOCTOR PAUW-Stock after de Gheyn-1615-SOLD




Engraved by Andries Jacobsz. Stock (c.1580-c.1648), a manerist engraver after a drawing by Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629).

The Anatomical Lesson of Professor Pieter Paaw / Pauw in the anatomical theatre of Leiden University, which Pauw actually had built and was the first such theatre in the Netherlands.

Image 28,7×22,2 cm. on period hand laid paper, with unidentified watermark, “IDGHeijn inv” and “Andr. Stoc Scul.” in the plate. With very old manuscript collector signature on front and rear reading HColligum (?)

Old fold lines as issued. Trimmed to image, slightly into image at right bottom. Thin paper spot at top middle, from paper making process. Nice impression.

This plate was used in two of Paaw’s books on anatomy (‘Primitiae Anatomicae de Humani Corporis…, 1615’ and ‘Succenturiatus Anatomicus. …, 1616’) and is condidered the artistic highlight of these works. Currently no other copy for sale anywhere.
