Biography artist: Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) was a Swiss-born engraver, publisher and topographical artist active mainly in Frankfurt. He became one of the most influential printmakers of the seventeenth century through his detailed city views, landscapes and book illustrations, which were widely circulated throughout Europe.
