BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Plate IIII from the ‘Ten Commandments’ (series title) publisher by Philips Galle in Antwerp.

Reference: New Hollstein Dutch 34-1(2).

Biography engraver: Adriaen Collaert (ca.1560?1618) was a Flemish designer and engraver. He was the son of Jan Collaert I and Anna van der Heijden. He married Justa Galle, the daughter of the man he worked for, Philip Galle.

Biography artist: Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) was an Antwerp painter and draughtsman of the late sixteenth century. His travels to Italy made him adopt the Mannerist style. His designs were very popular and were followed widely.
