Biography engraver: Gottfried Stein (1687-1747) was a German engraver active in Augsburg. He reproduced many French ornamental designs for the important publisher Jeremias Wolff, contributing to the spread of the Louis XIV and Regence decorative styles throughout Central Europe.
Biography artist: Jean Berain the Elder (1640-1711) was a French draughtsman and ornamental designer at the court of Louis XIV. His refined grotesque and arabesque designs influenced architecture, stage design, furniture, and the decorative arts across Europe. His ornamental prints were widely copied and reissued.
