BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Based on a 1723 self-portrait by Nicolaas Verkolje. Printed 1753.

Biography engraver: Jacob Houbraken (1698-1780) was one of the leading Dutch portrait engravers of the 18th century. He was especially known for his series of engraved portraits of famous figures from history, published in collaboration with historians and collectors.
Biography artist: Nicolaas Verkolje (1673-1746) was a Dutch painter and engraver from Delft and Amsterdam, known for portraits, genre scenes, and history paintings. He was the son of Jan Verkolje and continued in the tradition of refined, elegant Dutch painting.
