BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Included by Christiaan Josi in an edition with 100 works after Dutch and Flemish masters: Collection d’imitations de dessins d’apres les principaux maitres hollandais et flamands, London, C.Josi, 1821. All prints in this edition bear the coat of arms of Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, the initiator of the publication, on the verso.

Biography engraver: Christiaan Josi (1768-1828) was a Dutch engraver and art dealer. Josi came from Utrecht, and studied under John Raphael Smith in London. He inherited Cornelis Ploos van Amstel’s collections and catalogued his Rembrandt etchings.

Biography artist: Dirk Langendijk (Rotterdam, 8 March 1748 – Rotterdam, 15 December 1805), written as Langendyk in his day, was a Dutch draughtsman, painter and etcher. He produced mainly depictions of land and sea battles and other military scenes from the Dutch Patriottentijd (circa 1780-1800) and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (from 1792).
