Plate: Le Marche aux Herbes d”Amsterdam. (Herb market in Amsterdam.) Large plate shows a bustling street scene of a herb market beneath a large tree. Various kinds of root vegetables and spices are being traded. In the background is a canal boat, in the foreground a cock and dog are watching each other. Rare. Published by Jacques Philippe Le Bas, Paris, 1775. Ref: *Hollstein 17.Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Francois Anne David (1741-1824) after a painting by Gabriel Metsu (1629-1667, originally painted 1660-2)
Condition: Good, given age. Crease in left part of print. Margins cropped at plate mark at top margin, remargined with contemporary paper and consolidated with archival tape. Some small tears in lower margin, not effecting image, backed by contemporary paper and consolidated with acid free tape. General age-related toning and occasional light stains from handling. Please study image carefully.
