Description
(‘It is for him that I collected these’), a lady in a chair with flowers (roses) around her, probably for the man to whom the sword and sash to the left belong. A servant girl stands in attendance, a cat is prowling and a dog is growling.

Biography engraver: Gerard Vidal (1742-1801) was a French publisher/printer; printmaker. Marguerite Gerard (1761-1837) was a French painter and etcher. She was the daughter of Marie Gilette and perfumer Claude Gerard. She was the sister-in-law of Jean-Honore Fragonard, and when she was 14 she came to live with him. She became Fragonard’s pupil in the mid 1770’s and studied painting, printmaking and drawing.
