BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This original antique print was published in Paris, dated 1741. Separately published master print. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by Ingram after D. Teniers.

Biography engraver: John Ingram (British 1721-active till 1763) engraver, born in London in 1721, first practised engraving there. He subsequently went to Paris, and settled there for the remainder of his life. He both etched and engraved in line-manner. He engraved a number of plates after Francois Boucher, some after C. N. Cochin, and a set of emblematical figures of the sciences in conjunction with Cochin and Tardieu. He was employed in engraving small plates for book illustration, and more especially on plates for the Transactions of the Academie des Sciences. He was an engraver of great merit.

Biography artist: David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish artist, born in Antwerp. He was the son of David Teniers the Elder, while his son and grandson also became painters. He was a wildly prolific painter, creating over 900 works. During his life he started the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, after having presided over the Antwerp guild of painters.
