BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Original antique print published ca. 1770. Separately published master print. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Engraved by Jorma after D. Teniers.
Biography engraver: Jorma = Thomas Major (1720 – 1799), English engraver. He engraved a number of plates after Berghem, Teniers, Wouvermans, Claude, and other masters.
Biography artist: David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish artist, born in Antwerp. He was the son of David Teniers the Elder, while his son and grandson also became painters. He was a wildly prolific painter, creating over 900 works. During his life he started the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, after having presided over the Antwerp guild of painters.
